Families and pregnancy
Flying with a baby, with children, or pregnant.
The infant rules are simple and strict. The pregnancy rules are not published at all, which is worth knowing before you book rather than at the counter.
Infants under two
Trans Maldivian Airways carries infants under two free of charge. There is no separate seat for them - the operator says this is a legal requirement - so a baby travels on a parent's lap.
There is also no baggage allowance for an infant. Nappies, formula, a travel cot: all of it comes out of the parents' own 25 kg each. This is the rule that catches families out more than any other, because the long-haul airline almost certainly gave the baby an allowance of its own. See baggage for the full allowance.
The operator publishes nothing on pushchairs. A compact folding one is the safe choice; if yours is large, tell us and we will check before you fly.
Children
Children under twelve pay $185 one way against $283 for an adult, all taxes and the boat to Dhigurah included. They get the full 25 kg allowance, like any other passenger.
Two adults and two children under twelve pay $936 one way. That is the honest number to set against the alternatives - see seaplane or speedboat, where the family arithmetic is worked out.
The cabin is a propeller aircraft at low altitude, and it is loud. Ear defenders are worth packing for small children. The flight itself is thirty minutes.
On the ground, the free Neeri Lounge at the seaplane terminal has washrooms with baby-changing facilities.
If you are pregnant
Trans Maldivian Airways does not publish a pregnancy policy. Its FAQ sets no week limit and asks for no certificate. That does not mean anything goes; it means the answer has to be asked for.
So we ask for you. When you send your flight numbers, tell us how many weeks pregnant you will be on the day you fly, and we will get the operator's answer in writing before you pay anything.
Bring a fit-to-fly letter from your doctor if you are in later pregnancy. Your international airline is likely to want one anyway - many ask for it from around 28 weeks - and having it with you settles any question at the counter.
Two practical points for deciding. The seaplane is unpressurised and flies low, and a landing on open lagoon can be firm when there is a chop. The alternatives are a two-hour speedboat crossing of open water, or a domestic flight with a road transfer and a twenty-minute boat at the end. None of this is medical advice; your doctor is the person to ask about flying, and we will sort out everything else.
