Seaplane or domestic flight

Sometimes we will tell you not to fly with us.

Which transfer is right depends almost entirely on one thing: what time your international flight lands, or leaves.

The four ways to reach Dhigurah

OptionHow longChoose it when
Seaplane 30 min flying, then 5 min by boat You land between about 06:00 and 15:30 and want the arrival to be the first good thing about the holiday. Daylight only.
Domestic flight via Maamigili 20-30 min flying, then road and about 20 min by boat You land late, leave before 09:00, or want the cheaper option. Runs later than the seaplane and is the most weather-resilient.
Shared speedboat About two hours Budget leads and your timing fits the fixed departures. Stopped by swell rather than cloud, so it runs on some days the seaplane cannot.
Private speedboat About two hours, priced per boat You land after dark, or there are enough of you that per-boat beats per-person. The only option with no daylight limit.

What the domestic flight actually is

Villa International Airport Maamigili (VAM) sits at the western end of the same southern rim of South Ari Atoll that Dhigurah sits at the eastern end of - the two are about fourteen kilometres apart. You fly Malé to Maamigili, cross the island by road, then take a speedboat to Dhigurah. Three legs rather than two, and around forty-five to sixty minutes door to door once you are moving.

It is cheaper than the seaplane - the published fares for Dhigurah sit in the region of $185 to $215 per adult one way depending on who you book through, against our $283. It also runs later in the day and is the most weather-resilient of the three, because a runway does not care about the cloud base in the way a lagoon landing does.

What it costs you is the view. A pressurised aircraft at normal cruise altitude for twenty minutes is simply not the same thing as a Twin Otter at a few hundred metres over the atoll.

When we would steer you away from the seaplane

You land after 15:30. The seaplane cannot get you there the same day. The domestic flight often still can.

Your flight home leaves before 09:00. The seaplane cannot serve it at all. You either fly out from Maamigili or move to Malé the night before.

You land after dark. Nothing flies. It is an overnight near the airport, or a private speedboat.

Budget is the deciding factor and the sea is flat. The shared speedboat is roughly a quarter of the price and perfectly pleasant in good conditions.

And when it is clearly worth it

You land mid-morning, the weather is good, and you would rather spend thirty minutes watching the atoll go past underneath you than two hours in a boat cabin. That is the whole case, and on the right day it is an easy one.

Fares for the alternatives are the published figures we have seen, correct as of October 2026, and vary by operator and season. We quote our own fare in writing before you pay anything.
