Maldives seaplane schedule

There is no timetable.

Dozens of pages imply one exists. It does not, and understanding why is the difference between a calm arrival and a panicked one.

What happens instead

Seaplane routes are worked out daily, based on the number of passengers travelling and where they are going. A pilot may fly five or six sectors in a day, and at peak there can be around twenty aircraft in the air at once. Your seat is allocated to a rotation on the morning it flies, against the time your international flight lands.

You are not booking a flight number. You give us your arrival and departure flights, and your slot comes back confirmed the day before you travel. It sounds alarming the first time and it is simply how the Maldives flies.

The window

Seaplanes fly in daylight only, under visual flight rules - there is no instrument approach to a patch of lagoon. In practice that means first departures around 06:00 and everything back before dark. Three or four rotations a day serve this route.

The two cut-offs that decide everything

Arriving: land in Malé by 15:30. That is the operator's own figure for reaching the island the same day. Later than that and you are looking at a night near the airport, a domestic flight, or a private speedboat. If your flight is scheduled to land after 14:00, ask us before you book it.

Departing: your international flight must leave after 09:00. The first rotations off the island are around 06:00 and you still need about two hours at the international terminal. Count back roughly four hours from your departure and that is when you leave Dhigurah.

How long the day actually takes

Immigration and baggage at Velana can take ninety minutes at peak. The seaplane counter wants you forty-five minutes before your slot. The slot itself can move by an hour. Budget three to five hours from landing at Velana to walking into your guesthouse - most of it waiting rather than moving.

Weather

Rain alone does not ground a seaplane; moderate rain is flown through routinely. What stops flying is thunderstorms and low cloud, because the whole operation is visual. Delay is far more common than cancellation - aircraft hold and launch into weather windows.

Operating figures are the operator's published ones, correct as of October 2026.
