Velana Intl (MLE) → Dhigurah · South Ari Atoll
Dhigurah seaplane transfers. Twenty-five minutes above the Indian Ocean.
Seaplane transfers to Dhigurah. Velana airport to your guesthouse door — one flight, one boat, and nothing else in between.
03°29.0′N 072°56.0′E · 55.5 NM from Malé
Three kilometres long.Three hundred metres wide.
Dhigurah means “long island”. It is twelve times longer than it is wide, and from the air that is the only way you ever see it whole — a thin green line with a sandbank trailing off the southern tip.
What you are flying to
A local island in South Ari Atoll, 97 kilometres south-west of Malé, with a village of about 760 people at the northern end and three kilometres of uninterrupted beach running south from it.
This is not a resort island. There is a road, a harbour, a football pitch and around forty guesthouses. The whole southern rim of the atoll — the water you cross on final approach — is a marine protected area where whale sharks aggregate all year rather than seasonally. It is one of a handful of places on earth where that is true.
Plate 01 · the route
One leg, south-west, straight across the channel.
The track runs 220° true from the seaplane terminal at Velana to the lagoon off Dhigurah: 55.5 nautical miles, 103 kilometres, about twenty-nine minutes in the air. Most of it is open water — the Ari Channel, which drops past four hundred metres and has nothing in it at all.
The aircraft is a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter on floats, with a cabin of around fifteen seats. It is unpressurised, which is exactly why it flies low: a few hundred metres, not the ten kilometres of a jet. That is the whole reason the view is worth paying for. You can read the reef.
Plate is drawn to scale from published coordinates. Atoll outlines are indicative. Not for navigation.

How the day actually works
There is no timetable.
You are not booking a flight number. Seaplane rotations are built fresh each morning around who is flying where, and your slot is confirmed the day before.
Seaplanes fly in daylight only, under visual flight rules — there is no instrument approach to a patch of lagoon. The first rotations leave around 06:00 and the last get back before dark. Three or four a day serve this route, scheduled against international arrivals rather than a published clock.
Allow a long morning. Immigration and baggage at Velana can take ninety minutes at peak, the seaplane counter wants you forty-five minutes before your slot, and the slot itself can move by an hour. From touching down at Velana to walking into your guesthouse, budget three to five hours. Most of that is waiting, not moving.
The day sheet

- 15:30Land in Malé by this time to reach the island today
- 18:00Last arrivals back. Nothing flies after dark

Rain alone does not ground a seaplane. Thunderstorms and low cloud do.
The question nobody answers
“My flight lands at 21:40. What happens?”
Put your real flight time in. This is the single constraint that decides your whole arrival day, and almost nobody tells you about it before you have booked.
You will not make the seaplane today.
Nothing flies after dark. Landing at this hour means a night in Hulhumalé, ten minutes from the airport, and the first rotation out at about 06:00 — or a private speedboat, which is the one option with no daylight limit. Tell us your flight number and we will have someone meet you either way.
Cut-offs are the operator’s published figures. Your actual slot is confirmed the day before you fly.
The three hard rules
- 15:30Land in Malé by this time to reach Dhigurah the same day
- 09:00Your international departure must be later than this
- 06–18Daylight only. There is no night seaplane in the Maldives
Everything else about a seaplane transfer is negotiable. These three are not, and they are the reason most arrival plans go wrong.
The handover
The seaplane does not land at Dhigurah.
- It touches down on open lagoon water and taxis to a floating platform in South Ari Atoll.
- You step off the float onto the platform. Your boat is already tied up there.
- Five to ten minutes across the lagoon, depending on the sea and the boat.
- We meet you at the harbour and carry the bags. That leg is in the fare.

Ten minutes, and the engine noise is gone.
Ashore
This is the first photograph on this page taken from the ground. Everything above it was shot from the altitude you have just flown.
The crossing from the platform is short and usually flat. You will be the only people on the boat. Dhigurah comes up on the bow as a line of palms with a harbour wall in front of it, and then you are there.
What you came for.
Be honest about this
The seaplane is not always the right answer.
It is the best arrival in the Maldives and it is also the most constrained. Here is when it is worth it and when it is not.
| Route | Time | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Seaplane | ~25–30 min in the air, then 5–10 min by boat. Daylight only. You want the arrival to be the first good thing about the holiday. | |
| Domestic flight via Maamigili | ~20 min in the air, then road and boat. Cheaper, operates later than the seaplane, and the most weather-resilient of the three. You lose the view. | |
| Shared speedboat | About two hours. Roughly a quarter of the price. Stopped by swell rather than cloud, so it runs on some days the seaplane cannot. | |
| Private speedboat | About two hours, priced per boat. The only option with no daylight limit — the answer for a midnight landing or a large group. |
We will tell you if the seaplane is the wrong choice for your flight times. It often is.

What we need
- Arrival flight number and date
- Departure flight number and date
- Number of adults
- Ages of any children
- Your guesthouse on Dhigurah
Give us the flight numbers as early as you can. Seaplane slots are allocated against international arrivals, and late details are the most common reason a transfer cannot be arranged.
