Seaplane or speedboat
Is the seaplane worth it?
It costs about four times the speedboat. Whether that is worth paying depends less on the view than on what time you land.
Every way to Dhigurah, side by side
| Option | Per adult, one way | Time on the move |
|---|---|---|
| Seaplane | $283, all taxes and the boat included ($185 under 12) | 30 min flying, then 5 min by boat |
| Domestic flight via Maamigili | $185–216 | 45–60 min: flight, road, then about 20 min by boat |
| Shared speedboat | $60–70 | About 2 hours, longer in chop |
| Private speedboat | Priced per boat, not per person | About 2 hours |
| Public ferry | Under $10 | 6–7 hours or more, usually via another island |
| Option | When it runs | What stops it |
|---|---|---|
| Seaplane | Daylight only. Land in Malé by 15:30; your flight home must leave after 09:00. No fixed timetable - your slot is confirmed the day before. | Stopped by thunderstorms and low cloud. Not by rain on its own, and not by swell. |
| Domestic flight | Several flights a day, early morning to evening. Times vary day to day. | Rarely stopped by weather. The most resilient option. |
| Shared speedboat | Twice a day: from the airport around 11:00 and 16:00, from Dhigurah around 07:00 and 13:00, a little different on Fridays. Works with an arrival before about 15:00 or a departure after about 11:30. | Stopped by swell, roughly two metres and up. Not by cloud. |
| Private speedboat | Any time, including after dark. The only option with no daylight limit. | Stopped by swell. |
| Public ferry | A few days a week, not timed to international flights. | Stopped by swell, and limited by its own timetable. |
Prices for the alternatives are the published ranges we have seen, correct as of October 2026; operators change them. Our seaplane fare is quoted in writing before you pay anything.
What the premium actually costs you
Against a $66 shared speedboat, the seaplane is $217 more per adult each way. For a couple flying both ways that is $868.
Families feel it most. At the $66 fare, children pay the same as adults on the speedboat, whereas the seaplane discounts them. Two adults and two children under twelve pay $936 one way by seaplane against $264 by shared speedboat - a difference of $672 each way.
Against the domestic flight the gap is much narrower: roughly $67–98 per adult. That is the comparison that matters if the speedboat was never really on the table.
What it buys you: less time than you might think, sometimes
Thirty minutes against two hours looks decisive. In practice the difference is how your landing time lines up with the boat, because both options involve waiting at the airport.
Land at 09:00. The 11:00 speedboat has you on Dhigurah around 13:00. The seaplane, allowing for immigration, the transfer to the seaplane terminal and your slot, gets you there at much the same time. The view is the difference, not the clock.
Land at 11:30. You have just missed the late-morning boat. The next one leaves around 16:00 and arrives about 18:00 - six and a half hours after touchdown. The seaplane will usually have you on the island by mid-afternoon. This is where it earns its price.
Land at 15:00. Too late for the 16:00 boat to be a safe connection, and close to the seaplane's own cut-off. Ask before you book this flight; the domestic flight may be the answer.
When it is clearly worth it
Your landing time falls between the boats. Roughly late morning to early afternoon, as above. Three or four hours of your first day is the real purchase.
You get seasick, or the sea is up. The route crosses open water between atolls. In a two-metre swell the speedboats stop; in less than that, two hours can feel long. The seaplane does not care about the swell.
It is a short trip. On a five-night stay, half a day on each end is a real fraction of the holiday.
You want to see where you are. A Twin Otter at a few hundred metres over South Ari Atoll is the only way to see the reefs, sandbanks and Dhigurah's three-kilometre beach as a whole.
When the boat is the better call
You are a family on a budget, and the arithmetic above decides it.
You land after 15:30 or leave before 09:00. The seaplane cannot serve you at all, whatever the price. See landing late.
The sea is flat and your flight lands early. Catch the 11:00 boat and keep the difference.
